HEINZMANN's innovativ hybrid drives concept
Press article HEINZMANN (1th August, 2008)
HEINZMANN develops and manufactures innovative hybrid drive concepts with leading combustion engine companies:
The electric motor/generator for the diesel hybrid drive incorporates resource-saving, pioneering technology and overall expertise from the two HEINZMANN divisions - “Engine & Turbine Management” and "Electric Drives”.
The hybrid drive – a new and promising technology – has generated a whole range of market-ready products in the automotive sector. Now, it is set to enter the realm of off-road applications such as the field of agriculture, construction and industry.
This pioneering drive concept has the potential to reduce significantly the fuel consumption and to enhance the dynamics of the power train system. Various off-road applications promise fuel savings exceeding the savings reported from the automotive sector of up to 30 percent. This is due to the specific off-road load cycles with typically fast changing power demands.
A preferred off-road concept is the mild hybrid, which consists of diesel engine, electric motor, battery and control unit. The electric drive enhances the main diesel engine drive.
The mild hybrid performs the following functions:
- start/stop – a starter motor is no longer required
- boost – the electric motor covers the power peaks (peak shaving)
- recuperation – the braking energy is charged into the battery
- battery charging – when the power of the diesel engine is not fully required, the electric motor can operate as generator to charge the battery
The electric machine functions significantly improve the overall efficiency of the drive system. When working as drive, the electric motor converts energy from the battery and delivers it to the drive system. When operating as generator, it takes energy from the drive system (braking energy or energy from the combustion engine) and uses it to charge the battery. Thus, a smaller combustion engine can be selected (down sizing) which operates in a more efficient way. Power peaks will be covered by the electric motor using battery energy.
HEINZMANN is currently developing hybrid concepts for agriculture, industry, municipalities and the construction industry in cooperation with manufacturers of combustion engines and equipment. The electrical output HEINZMANN motors is between 10 and 100 kW.
A variety of applications awaits the hybrid drive and it will soon be able to demonstrate its positive qualities such as its high torque even in the low engine speed range and in transient use.
The Heinzmann concept is also suitable as full hybrid version, as diesel-electric drive system or as variable speed generator (VSG). For diesel-electric drive system and VSG, the electric machine is exclusively used as electric generator where the speed is adjusted to the actual load demand to yield maximum efficiency of the combustion engine. Customers of mobile gen-sets in the construction industry and of special construction vehicles cooperate with Heinzmann to enter the market with these innovative products.
