Highly efficient modern gas engines with low emissions reach their optimum efficiency close to the knock limit. This makes reliable detection of knocking combustion, which can lead to severe engine damage, indispensable.

Besides protecting the engine, a knock detection system should also help the engine to run at the best possible operating point. The increasing use of gases with a fluctuating heat value, such as biogases, brings additional challenges to knock detection due to the different specific knock sensitivity.

The HEINZMANN ARIADNE knock control system provides intelligent functions for running the engine under the best possible conditions. To achieve this, the knock control communicates with the ignition system, the mixture control and the speed/load controller, to ensure that each cylinder runs in the optimum way. The cylinder individual monitoring enables maximum overall effi ciency with minimal emission of pollutants. As a low-cost solution, engine monitoring can also be achieved with a single sensor.

The system is designed in such a way as to ensure that ARIADNE is perfectly suitable for integration in a HEINZMANN engine management system or other-make system. Standard interfaces such as CAN and Modbus, as well as digital and analogue I/O, ensure sufficient fl exibility for a vast range of applications. In addition to pure engine monitoring with appropriate protective strategies, ARIADNE also allows the engine operating parameters to be infl uenced for each cylinder to ensure optimum running.
