Application of Hybrid Drives

Another interesting application for hybrid technology are small diesel generators, so-called “variable speed generators”. These have been used in the industrial sector for decades to generate electrical energy in the low kW range (stand-alone operation without storage for electrical energy: building site generators, auxiliary generators, so-called “auxiliary power units” in trucks, etc.).

A VSG (variable speed generator) system allows the speed of the combustion engine to be adjusted so that it is always operated at the optimum point in terms of consumption as a function of changing electrical power draw.
